The final of the Afcon 2022 was between two teammates from Liverpool. Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane were on the opposing teams. Salah was playing for Egypt and Mane played for Senegal. Egypt is the record champion with seven titles. However, they had to recognize Senegal as the better team in the Afcon 2022 final. Due to a 0-0 draw after extra time, the penalty shootouts had to bring a decision. It was Senegal that won the penalties with 4-2. Senegal will try to defend their Africa Cup title in the next edition in 2023.

Samuel Eto’o is the all-time top scorer of the Africa Cup with 18 goals for Cameroon. Laurent Pokou is in second place with 14 goals, while Rashidi Yekini is third with 13 goals.

Afcon winners

As mentioned earlier, Egypt is the record champion with seven titles. Cameroon comes in second place with five titles, and Ghana is in third place with four titles. Nigeria won three times while Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Congo-Kinshasa won twice. Zambia, Tunisia, Sudan, Senegal, Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa, and Congo-Brazzaville won once.

Egypt’s biggest win is a 15-0 win over the United Arab Emirates. On the other hand, the biggest loss was against Italy in 1928. Italy won this game with 11-3 in the Netherlands. Egypt won the Africa Cup 7 times. Egypt came out on top in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010. Ahmed Hassan has played 184 matches for Egypt, and Hossam Hassan is the top scorer with 68 goals. Mohammed Salah is one of the most popular players in Egypt.

Cameroon’s most famous player of all time is Samuel Eto’o. Playing for Barcelona and Cameroon made him part of the absolute top players of the world. He is the all-time leading scorer as well. Cameroon is the team that has been active at the World Cup most of all African teams. The team has won the Africa Cup of Nations five times (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017). Rigobet Song is the player with the most appearances for Cameroon and became the head coach after his professional football career. Cameroon’s biggest win was a 9-0 win over Chad in 1965. They have lost four times with a difference of 5 goals. That happened in matches against South Korea (5-0), Norway (6-1), Russia (6-1) and Costa Rica (5-0). All these matches happened between 1984 and 1997.

 

Ghana is also known as the Black Stars. Asamoah Gyan is the player with the most caps and goals for Ghana. He managed to score 51 times in 109 appearances. The Ghana Football Association is the oldest in Africa. The biggest win of Ghana was a 0-12 victory over Nyasaland in 1965. On the other hand, the biggest defeat was in 1968 when Bulgaria beat Ghana 10-0. Ghana won the AFCON four times (1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982).

Super Eagles is the nickname of the Nigerian football team. Ahmed Musa is the player with the most appearances for Nigeria, with 105 matches at the time of writing, while Rashidi Yekini is the all-time top scorer with 37 goals. The biggest win was against Dahomey when Nigeria scored ten goals and conceded 1 (10-1). The biggest defeat Nigeria faced was against British Togoland with a final score of 7-0. Nigeria won the Afcon title three times (1980, 1994 and 2013).
