The Czech Republic national football team represents the Czech Republic in international football and took part in their first international competition in 1996. These were the Euros where they finished as runners-up. They have taken part in every European Championship since then. The team doesn’t have a national stadium and ten different cities have hosted national team matches. The most commonly used stadium is the Generali Arena, the home stadium of Sparta Prague.
Petr Čech is the most capped player in the history of the Czech Republic. He has made a total of 124 appearances for the national team. He is described by numerous players, pundits and managers as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history. Petr holds the record for the most Czech Footballer of the Year and Czech Golden Ball wins. Adding to that he holds several goalkeeping records, including the Premier League record for the fewest appearances required to reach 100 clean sheets, doing so in 180 appearances. He has the most clean sheets in a season with 24 as well as the record for the most clean sheets in Premier League history with 202.
Another famous player is Pavel Nedvěd who is described as one of the best footballers of his generation and one of the most successful players ever to emerge from the Czech Republic. He was nicknamed ‘Furia Ceca’ or ‘Czech Fury’ by Italian fans during his time at Juventus. Nedvěd was a key member of the Czech team which reached the final of Euro 1996. He also captained the national team at Euro 2004 where they were defeated in the semi-final.
Jan Koller was noted for his height, strong physique and heading ability. Koller is the all-time top scorer for the Czech Republic national team, with 55 goals in 91 appearances in a decade long career starting in 1999. He represented the nation at three European Championships and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He started his football training as a goalkeeper but was converted to a striker by the time he started his professional career with the Czech club Sparta Prague. Due to his stature, he was often nicknamed ‘Dino’ or ‘human lighthouse’ throughout his career.
