Famous Belarusian Footballer

Allaksandr Paulavich Hleb

Alexander Hleb is a former national footballer born in 1981. He signed for the Belarusian club BATE Borisov at the age of 17. His talent was spotted early by German Bundesliga club VFB Stuttgart. Stuttgart signed Hleb and his younger brother Vyacheslav in 2000. Alexander was a crucial player in the second season for the club and became one of the most important players. This even led to winning the Belarusian Footballer of the year awards in 2002.

Hleb joined Premier League side Arsenal in 2005. He mainly played as a right-winger and was a popular player of the fans. Unfortunately, he suffered from a few injuries during his stay at the club. Nevertheless, was Hleb the first Belarusian player to start in the Champions League final. On the 16th of June, 2008, Alexander signed for Barcelona. This was not a great success due to a few injuries and severe competition. Hleb later admitted that his biggest regret was to leave Arsenal for Barcelona. During his stay in the Spanish La Liga, he was loaned out to different clubs, including his former club Stuttgart. Alexander Hleb ended his career in 2019, playing for Isloch Minsk in the Belarusian Premier League. He has 81 caps for the National Team and is the 14th top scorer of all time.

Belarus National Team

The Belarusian football players played for the Soviet Union National Team until 1992. After this date, the team separated from the Soviet Union. The Belarus National Team played their first match in 1992 against Lithuania. The team has never qualified for the European Championship or FIFA World Cup. They’ve had some disappointing qualifying runs but also some astonishing results. One of the most notable mentioned is a home victory again the Netherlands and an away win and home draw against France in the European Championship 2008 qualifiers. Despite these results, the team did not qualify. The team has success in minor tournaments such as the LG Cup in 2002 and the Malta International Tournament in 2004 and 2008. The national kit colours are white and red.

Maksim Romaschenko is the national team’s top scorer with 20 goals in 64 appearances. Alyaksandr Kulchy has the most caps (102) for the national team.
