Portugal National Team

The Portugal national Football Team is since 1921 active in international men’s football. The team participated in a major tournament for the first time in 1966. In that year, the team finished third in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. It was a quality team with one of the greatest players to grace a football pitch: Eusébio da Silva Ferreira.

Eusébio
Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, known as Eusébio and nicknamed the Black Panther, was a Mozambican-born Portuguese footballer. He played the majority of his career for Benfica (15 out of the 22 years). His position was as a striker. He scored an astonishing number of 733 goals in 745 matches. He won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and was runner up in 1962 en 1966, thanks to his outstanding performances. He helped the national team to third place in their first major tournament with nine goals.

Eusébio is not the only great player Portugal has produced.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro
He is considered by many as the greatest footballer of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer for Real Madrid, the player with the most goals and assists in the UEFA Champions League and international goals. All these records are still counting, as the Manchester United legendary nr. 7 is still active in 2022.

Despite being injured in the final, the national team captain led his squad to the European Championship title in 2016.

Estádio Nacional
The Estádio Nacional is the home venue of the Portuguese national team. The stadium is known for being the first stadium to host a UEFA club competition. The stadium first opened in 1944. It has a capacity of 37,593.
